For Europe Day 2006, on 9 May, the Institute of the Regions of Europe (IRE) launched a cultural project across Europe backed by the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the EU – the Café d’Europe.

Café d'Europe.

Cafés, perhaps more than any other institution, stand for communication and local culture. They are a symbol of our common European heritage.

Europe is listening.

In 27 Cafés d’Europe, in 27 European capitals, coffeehouse discussions took place on Europe Day with the public and young people from all over Europe. Questions were asked, ideas aired, creative and visionary approaches proposed. The core issue of this discussion was – and still is – the diversity and colourful nature of the European Union.
In the Cafés d’Europe people – writers and members of the public – had the chance to write their “Story of Europe”. Everyone is still welcome to hand in his or her story via this website.
